I do not share the pessimism about Qualcomm. This is a short term problem. Or is it a problem? Let us examine the implications. Samsung was going to make CDMA phones and sell in USA and other places. Samsung cancels the order for CDMA ASIC chips, because it does not have the money or credit at this time. So Qcom loses that ASIC chips order. So it loses the possible earnings from sale of those ASIC chips. But now, someone else, Qcom itself or Sony will make the same phones and sell them, possibly at higher prices than Samsung would have sold. Total number of ASIC chips used should remain same. What about rest of the world? Everyone thinks Korea is Asia. Bunk! Bunk! Bunk! The total population of Korea, Thailand, Malayasia and Indonesia is less than 270 Million, that is 1/4 population of China or India. Are we so poor in our Geography about Asia that we are constantly equating this small portion of Asia with all of Asia which is at least 12 times more in population? The panic peddelers of CNBC: Susie Gharib, Felicia Taylor and ever gloomy Jimmy Rogers would benefit brushing up their knowledge of Geography. And what about Latin America? What about North America including good old USA? Are all other markets dead? Let us not be paranoid for a short term problem and lose the global picture. I fail to see anybody mentioning about QCom's ownership and technology for Globalstar satelite phone system. Globalstar should be functioning by Sept-Oct 1998. It is all Qcom technology. As that time approaches, let us see if something similar to Win95 hoopla of Aug.22,1995 occurs. Let us look at the whole picture and rationally, rather than indulge in knee jerk pessimism and panic peddling. Bharat H. Barai
