Betty,

The nearest reasonably priced region in proximity to Marin County would be Vallejo in Solano County, then next county over. Vallejo has very good and very inhospitable parts. Traffic over two-lane Highway 37 (Vallejo-Highway 101-Marin County) can be a nightmare, and there is the Highway 37 Bridge, but it's something of a hybrid bridge, and there is no bridge toll (at least for now). There are also the commuter ferry boats from Vallejo to Sausalito and Tiburon, SF, and other Bay Area points. I am not familiar with public transportation within Marin County.

Perhaps some other of our Bay Area threadsters could suggest something.

Holly

Betty, just to the north of Marin County is Sonoma County. The big town there, Santa Rosa, pretty much sucks. However, Petaluma is very popular, and is still relatively inexpensive. In fact, there are small quaint towns all over Sonoma County that most people around here love, but cannot live in because they are a little too far away from San Francisco to commute. Your son will be lucky if he works in Marin, because he will be working much closer to these cute small towns in Sonoma County, and could live there.

In my opinion, the East Bay counties are not really as desirable as Sonoma, but the best thing would be for your son to come and really just have a look around. This is a really beautiful place to live.
