>> IMO the advocates in the US would be well advised to pitch it from a pragmatic perspective and quit framing it as a right. <<

It certainly does seem that way, given everything.

>> The Constitution gives the federal government the authority to raise armies. <<

Of course, I wasn't thinking. Thanks.

You'd think if (R)'s can sell the BS that tax cuts always raise revenues, (D)'s could sell the actual truth that universal health care saves money.

The framers would never have entertained the notion, not even in a drug induced fantasy.

The framers lived in a time when leeches had just gone out of style.Right before doctors would masturbate women to treat hysteria. Treatments were a good stiff shot of apple jack or herbs and plants gathered from the forest. In the bustling metropolises, you might get mercury or camphor. Medicine was hit and miss, mainly miss. They didn't even have germ theory and spontaneous generation was still a thing. The realization that variolation with cowpox would protect from smallpox without the danger of variolation with smallpox.was just on the horizon,

So yeah, drug induced fantasy for anything that worked. If there had been effective medicine at the time, I could definitely see Benjamin Franklin and others pushing for something on the state if not national level. It certainly would contribute to the general wellbeing as much as the Post Office, public libraries and public schools.
