Sanguine is a very schizophrenic word. Cheerfully bloodthirsty? Irony built right into it.

I’m not going to defend China. No nation - and no human being - are perfect. I know one thing - socialism is an idiotic, unnatural political arrangement when individuals have no rights and own virtually nothing. Everything is controlled by bureaucrats - which is hugely corrupting and destructive for the economy. Socialism will never bring hundreds of millions of people out of profound poverty and oppression into the modern world - to a point when they have a huge, affluent middle class, and can seriously compete with the US and Europe.

If they’re socialists, it must be a weird new “variant”.

David P. Goldman - who wrote for decades for Asia Times under the pen name “Spengler” - is imo one of the most interesting political observers and commentators. He also runs a hedge fund “on the side”. Has extensive personal and business connections all over the world. I was first introduced to him a couple of decades ago, on this thread. Agree or disagree, he’s almost always an interesting read - even when he writes about the theory of music. For the last number of years, he played Cassandra - kept calling for a “Manhattan project” - a united private / government to mobilize and focus a great push to prevent China from winning the technological war. He was ignored.

Absolutely agree. The US Constitution is still the single most advanced, progressive political document ever written. Our so called “progressives” are actually Regressives, trying to drag us back to the times when nations were ruled by various oppressive authoritarian regimes - who would “grant” rights to the people - or take them back, for some reason or another.
