I went barefoot. Loved the squeegy feeling between toes. I would come home at night just filthy. I don't know how she washed all the mud out. And other things.

we didn't have mud either. our yards were full of coal ashes from our furnaces before the city started picking up ashes by the barrel. Half a barrel is all i could manage to get up the cellar steps. sometimes i almost got killed when i fell back a step or two. those were the days. no fire in the furnace, i would get up and run to the closet in the kitchen that had the hot water kero heater to get dressed for school. then run down and fire up the furnace.
