The problem (IMHO) arises when people are seeing the thread differently. If you have five people filtered and I have a different five people filtered, we could get very different views of the thread. Plus, if you filter out a wacko, you'll still get the dozens of responses to him that people who aren't filtering him left.

I realize that this already happens due to manual filtering (hitting next or selectively reading message), but it will be magnified if automated filtering (albeit under user control) is added.

I would love the ability to filter out some of the wackos out there, but I have a hard time seeing how I can effectively have just the stuff I don't want to see filtered out without missing things.
