Steve - interesting posts. You've defined the layers but do you have more information regarding the "concerns" - ideally on a per layer basis?

I believe AWRE has a solution to these issues. They announced a router and that's about as far up the OSI layers as one should need to go (handing it off to TCP-IP on the workstation). Perhaps it would be nice if there were additional functionality. Are these Quality Of Service (QOS) issues? That would be nice to have but it shouldn't stop xDSL from being deployed. We need raw bandwidth at the moment and QOS can be addressed in software later.

I have noticed that few of the other players mention protocols etc. when they talk about their products. Do you know if AWRE licenses upper layer software as a product separate from their chipset or is it tightly integrated?

BTW - did you know that Microsoft licensed FORE's ATM technology about a year ago. I believe AWRE's solutions can (optionally?) use ATM across the local loop. All the makings of integrating data/voice/video across these higher speed pipes. No surprise the telco's are "slow" to the party. Perhaps the next version of Windows will have added functionality to take advantage of the coming integration. Bill's been pushing that a lot lately.

I'm not that optimistic short term about AWRE's stock price and I'm not too keen on the idea that they are in the modem manufacturing business. That doesn't seem to play to their strengths. I'm also concerned that the CEO had some bad press at the recent conference. There seem to be a some proprietary hybrid alternatives (Paradyne, Pairgain) that are getting all the press. I had hope the conference 2 weeks ago would clear some things up but I'm seeing mud. Momentum seems lost at the moment.
