HI Kirk,

Big ones get caught as the spear can be up to 18 inches and that includes usually 5 to 6 tangs. Each tang has little arms that swing out to keep the fish attached.

Small fish can slip between the tanf, but it must be 35 inches to be legal.

Playing in the cold is pretty easy with the warm clothing available and water proof boots. Ice fisherman have a line of waterproof clothing made by STRIKER ICE it is insulated and a flotation device in the water. Muck boots are really comfy and water proof.

One looks a bit like the Pillsbury dough boy, but warm. LOL
