When Stalin died in 1953, so many teary-eyed Russians hurried to Moscow to pay their respects that the KGB following SOP for "insurrections"... killed hundreds, perhaps as many as 1500
The story is that during Stalin’s funeral there was a great stampede - and many people died. Very famous and tragic story. Never heard of anyone blaming the KGB for that. There was another famous - and deathly - stampede - during the coronation of the last Tsar, Nicholas II.

About Putin’s approval ratings:

>>>> According to the Levada Center pollster, Putin’s job approval grew to 69% last month from 65% in December. Putin’s disapproval dropped to 29% in January from 34% the previous month.<<<

Almost 30% disapproval that’s millions of people. Explains the many protests and demonstrations. You don’t believe them? Well, it’s your choice. Find something you like better. But, stories about individuals really do not answer the question.

No one ever accused Putin of being a kind, gentle guy. Personally, he’s probably a SOB. He kept himself in power for decades - so, he’s by definition a strongman. I have no idea to what extent he was part of any violent actions against people. I just don’t know. All I know is stuff I read in the papers. And according to our papers, he’s the Devil.

I don’t know why you call my sharing of my impression formed over many years a “meme”. Those were my words based on what I think. Simple.
