I'm wondering what victory is for him at this point? Even if he gets to install his puppet regime and claim victory, he'll have a nightmare insurgency that will drain his military's morale (not to mention the cost of "owning" Ukraine) and an economy in a shambles back home that will be shunned from global participation. He's fooked.....

Putin is a chess player and climbed the political ranks within the KGB. I imagine he has a well thought out strategy. We're not dealing with North Korea or Saddam here.
I'll make some controversial comments so everyone can put me on ignore because I know they aren't popular but...
Osama Bin Laden did exactly what he wanted to do if you read his proclamation. He baited us into an unwinnable war, bankrupted us when we were headed to surpluses.
Timothy McVeigh warned us about everything that has since happened in his Invictus. He probably would have said more which is why his was one of the fastest trials and executions I've ever seen. The government wanted his mouth closed.
Snowden etc. The same. I don't condone what all these people did but their views were correct and the horrible acts were just the only way that they could hope to get people to listen. Few did.
Putin isn't completely wrong here. We wouldn't allow China or Russia to put bases and missiles on our Canadian/Mexican border. We promised we wouldn't expand NATO into former Soviet states. Ask the Indians about how good our word is.
Again, I'm not condoning the invasion of the Ukraine but I understand Putin's view and we weren't honoring our promises and we weren't listening to his objections.
There's always a point where you stand up to the bully, even if you know you probably won't win.
