Again, I can only speak for myself. I didn’t think Russia would invade. I thought the whole business with surrounding Ukraine with troops was intended to have the West take them, at last, seriously - and negotiate a deal of Ukraine staying out of nato. Once again, they were treated as if they didn’t exist.

When I saw that, I expected “some” escalation - like, “independence” for Eastern regions (which, btw, was agreed upon in Minsk, but later ignored).

I was surprised by the extent of the campaign. Still am. I do know that Russia wouldn’t “take over “ Ukraine even if you paid them to do it. It’s a big country with maybe 40mln people, half of whom hate Russians. Their GDP per capita is roughly 1/4 of Russia’s.

I imagine they had a few alternative strategies worked out - and would activate different versions depending on events.
