All civilian deaths are reprehensible, but I have to say, I do not recall the same outrage when over a near 20-year period, over 200,000 Iraqi civilians were killed while the country was under US occupation.

The way the US media is portraying the Ukraine conflict is far different than how they portrayed other conflicts in which the US was the aggressor.

I mean, where was the outrage when the US used a drone strike to kill an entire wedding procession in Yemen?

Of course, there was the US airstrike that killed 37 civilians, mostly women and children, in Afghanistan in 2008:

There is also a big wedding party in Iraq in 2004 the US hit with an airstrike, killing 42-civilians:

That's just weddings. Few on SI gave a rip about these things. Why? You'd have to search people's souls to get that answer.

War combatants do horrific things during wars, but somehow it's coming across that what Russia is doing is some kind of new, unique, and beastly warfare.

If anything, they've taken a page out of the US playbook and have been trying to limit the civilian casualties, unlike how they approached things when they occupied Afghanistan in the 80's and just killed and maimed anything and everything.

I'm not saying I approve of what Russia's doing. I'm saying the coverage of this is so 180-degrees different from when the US was the aggressor that it calls into question the ability of the media to be objective in their reporting. I think we can see the major media is about surfing public opinion for dollars, and not what has historically been known as journalism.

I am predicting that in the coming week Russia will increase their level of brutality and increase the bombing of the cities. The issue for the Russians is that they have to achieve a quick victory. IF Kyiv can hold out for 2 or 3 months, then Russia might be forced to come to the table. They know this and now have to resort to desperate tactics even if they know them to be risky and likely to fail. They want to be in a position of negotiating from a position of strength because they know that right now they have little leverage. So they have to pick up pace. Sad and very sorry for the Ukrainians, but is how it will go.

I have actually seen wars (plural) up close and personal. It is such an ugly and stupid thing. Although I am not a strict pacifist, long ago I decided that I would never support any war short of a self defense against a direct attack. You will find many who have actually seen wars agree with me.

Wars take a momentum of their own and make unpredictable turns. The media fans passions and amplifies them. And before you know it, you find that you have painted yourself in a corner and cannot get out of a predictable situation that nobody wants to be in. The problem is this: The best chance for Ukraine to "win" is a protracted war of attrition. The longer the war goes on and more casualties each side takes, the less likely that it can end. So ironically, the casualties work out in Ukraine's favor. BUT, the best chance for peace is a quick settlement. This is the conundrum and the paradox of war.

Putin is an idiot and an asshole for bringing this to both nations. He will be known as the Russian "Saddam" and will probably end the same way - dragged on the streets as people celebrate his demise.
