Israel has a powerful military - but fighting a war against a much larger nation, with a population of maybe X10 that of Israel - is a steep task. During the latest Hamas/ Hizballah skirmish, Israel’s ability to intercept incoming rockets was depleted. They had to go to the US for help. (I, actually, suspect that to some extent, finding out how many rockets they can intercept was one of the purposes of the terrorist operation).

There is another factor which may give Iran pause. If it becomes known that they’re on the final stretch towards nukes - a number of Sunni Arab countries will also acquire them. In effect, it would lead to a nuclear race in the region.

PS — btw, must say, I’m very impressed with the way the US, NATO and Russia are handling the issue of NOT triggering a nuclear exchange. Putin was visibly shaken and fought to control his emotions when he was issuing the order to keep nuke capacity on alert. Biden and the NATO leadership were also very clear about being careful.

Iran would be a lot more aggressive. They would use the nuke leverage openly and to full extent. Things would be far more likely to blow.

Hence, I think nuclear non-proliferation agreements are one of the best things we inherited from the overall politically very creepy 20th century. Someone ought to remind this to Obama/Kerry/Biden and company.
