I love the minimalist dialog, and the sense of place he creates. Harold Bloom called Blood Meridian "Shakespearean", and compared the Judge to Iago. The Nobel panel may take that into consideration.

The Border Trilogy remains my favorite, All the Pretty Horses in particular. Yes, he seems to be familiar with the region. I remember thinking as I was reading that McCarthy must have read Bartlett's Survey of the Texas and New Mexico Border, and other travels and explorations of that period. Bartlett is interesting because he departed from his mission of boundary survey to write a travelogue. He visited areas that had nothing to do with his survey. His description of Apaches, Comanches, Mexicans, and Anglos he encountered would fit right in with Blood Meridian.
