I should add that we use relative motion and change in size of an object to help us humans navigate and avoid hitting objects as we move. Our brain (computer and software learning) tell us over time how to walk and navigate.

We don't need LIDAR to do that.

Cars may be more like bats, who use echolocation to navigate. They do send sound waves out.
