Newspaper reverses report on steward

WASHINGTON, Feb. 9 (UPI) _ The Wall Street Journal has retracted a report of last week which said White House steward Bayani Nelvis told a grand jury he saw President Clinton alone with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

The Journal had said Nelvis told Secret Service personnel he saw Clinton alone with Lewinsky in a White House study but the newspaper says today that Nelvis made the opposite claim to the grand jury.

The newspaper did not offer an explanation for the mistake, although it carried a quote from its managing editor, Paul Steiger, saying: ''We deeply regret our erroneous report of Mr. Nelvis's testimony.''

The report was among a series of published accounts of grand jury testimony, citing unnamed sources, which prompted lawyers for Clinton to accuse independent counsel Kenneth Starr of allowing illegal leaks to the news media.
