I used the same reasoning. Choose: Fools think alike, or Great minds run in the same channels.

I spent time on them at the last two Comdexes in Las Vegas. In 1996, they were doing Eagle and it seemed totally silly. In 1997, they were much more subdued, but showed some reasonable product. The Eagle was nearly invisible. Some of the independent tape library people told me that EXBT was dead - KO'ed by DLT. Could be, but I spent some time on DLT too and I'm not sure that its claims are more reasonable than the helical folks. Checked out Sony AIT. Exbt should be able to steal all of its useful features in a weekend. I think Sony is more of a spoiler - for Exbt and Iom and pc space.

My thought is that tape becomes relegated to libraries. Beauty of DLT is that it has less bending and spools faster. Bad thing about DLT is that tape leaves cassette and enters tape reader on the DLT. With Exbt and Sony, operates just like VCR - can start and stop mid tape. Right now doesn't happen; they all rewind because the index is at the front. In a hierarchial storage design, the index can be outside the tape. There can be multiple readers per stack. Real world throughput may be more related to being able to get in and out rather than zooming through the linear track. Hence I think exbt can do it.

Meanwhile they have all this cash, a large installed base, a bean counter running it who has personally bought shares, and as you say events have conspired to crater the price. To be honest, I missed the drop into the 5's. I would have backed the truck up had I seen it. I bought several thou in the 6's. I think it will go to 12, maybe 16. But need to be patient.
