Yeadon- With regard to "new products" - what did you have in mind? I would be particularly interested to know whether DSC has the wherewithal to have been a possible provider for the contract that QWEST just announced with Nortel. QWEST is approaching TELCOM from a Data/Communications perspective and it would really be nice to know if DSC has the products to sell to future companies like QWEST. Anybody know?

Headline: Nortel (Northern Telecom) Awarded QWEST Switching Contract for
Coast-to-Coast Network Expansion

======================================================================
DALLAS, Feb. 9 /PRNewswire/ - Augmenting its 1997 purchase of Nortel
(Northern Telecom) advanced fiber optic transmission equipment for its 16,000
mile coast-to-coast telecommunications network, Qwest, a multi-media
communications company, has chosen Nortel's backbone switching hubs. Under the
terms of the 3-year, US$50 million supply agreement, Qwest has agreed to
purchase Nortel's DMS 250 SuperNode tandem switching systems and
ServiceBuilder Intelligent Network (IN) service creation platform for
installation in the expanding Qwest network.
''Our rapidly growing long distance services require us to enhance our
network with additional switches,'' said Larry Seese, executive vice
president, Network Engineering Operations, Qwest. ''We chose Nortel because
they are the leader in long distance platform technology with an extensive AIN
service platform. The purchase of these new Nortel DMS switches is a precursor
to the introduction of our AIN (Advanced Intelligent Networking) product line
in late spring.''
Qwest initially plans to deploy Nortel DMS-250 switching systems and
ServiceBuilder portfolio in the Atlanta, Chicago, and New York metropolitan
areas during the first and second quarter of this year.
Nortel's DMS-250 SuperNode tandem switch provides long-distance carriers
with extensive feature applications and reliability to meet customers'
requirements for advanced voice and data communications. The
DMS-250---configurable from 480 to 100,000 ports---can be partitioned for
multi-customer, multi-function applications and IN triggers to provide NOO,
Virtual Private Networking (VPN), Dialable Wideband Services, as well as a
variety of custom features for interexchange carriers, such as speed dialing,
conference calling, prepaid calling cards, and enhanced billing and
administrative functions.
Nortel's ServiceBuilder IN portfolio addresses wireline and wireless
network operators' needs for service differentiation and time-to-market
velocity to quickly meet the challenges of an evolving marketplace.
ServiceBuilder's long distance offering provides number translations and
routing services, VPN, 800, calling card, local number portability, and
personal number service. Included in the ServiceBuilder portfolio are the
Service Control Point, Intelligent Peripheral, Service Management System, and
Service Creation Environment systems.
