InfoTech Forecasts Worldwide DVD-ROM Title Revenue
Will Exceed $500 Million in 1998

WOODSTOCK, Vt.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 9, 1998--With the installed base of
DVD-ROM equipped PCs projected to reach 7 million by year-end as PC manufacturers begin
volume shipments of DVD-ROM equipped systems, worldwide DVD-ROM title revenue will rise
from just $3.5 million in 1997 to $567 million in 1998, according to a new InfoTech report, Optical
Publishing Industry Assessment, Ninth Edition.

Royalties from PC and upgrade kit title bundles will continue to contribute the majority of consumer
DVD-ROM title publishing revenue in 1998. By the second half of 1999, when DVD-ROM drives
are expected to become a mainstream PC component, retail will become the dominant distribution
channel for DVD-ROM titles, leading to a sharp increase in title revenue.

By 2003, worldwide DVD-ROM title revenue across both PC desktop and TV set-top platforms is
forecast to exceed $70 billion, as DVD-ROM supplants CD-ROM as the principal delivery format
for all types of packaged interactive media, including applications software, business information,
games, education and computer-based training.

According to InfoTech Chairman and CEO Julie B. Schwerin, "CD-ROM publishing across all
applications and sectors was a $44 billion business worldwide in 1997. As the industry transitions to
DVD-ROM, InfoTech expects packaged interactive media to maintain a compound annual growth
rate of over 10 percent through 2003 even as worldwide Internet usage increases, with DVD-ROM
providing a high bandwidth collectible format that is more complementary than competitive with
online delivery. The imperative now for interactive publishers is to create properties that can migrate
readily from platform to platform in order to maximize revenue opportunities."

The InfoTech Report: Optical Publishing Industry Assessment is a comprehensive, statistical profile
of the worldwide interactive entertainment and digital information industry, providing integrated title
and hardware sales and installed base data by country from 1986 with projections through 2005.

Scientific-Atlanta to demonstrate HDTV encoder at NAB.....................

Scientific-Atlanta's New HDTV Products To Help Broadcasters Meet FCC Digital Television Mandate

PRNewswire
Fri, Feb 06 1998

PowerVu system can deliver vital digital television capabilities for

broadcaster or cable transmission applications

ATLANTA, Feb. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Scientific-Atlanta (NYSE: SFA), today announced the introduction of two new high definition television (HDTV) products to expand the PowerVu(R) digital video compression system, the PowerVu HD High Definition Encoder and PowerVu HD High Definition Decoder. The new products will provide critically needed capabilities for the more than 1600 U.S. television stations which must comply with an FCC mandate to be on the air with DTV (Digital Television) programming over the next five years.

In a digital network, encoders and decoders perform essential operations for the cost-effective, accurate delivery of video to viewers. The PowerVu encoder analyzes the video and determines the most efficient method for compressing it. Proper compression enables the digitally compressed video signal to require only a fraction of the satellite space an analog signal would require. At the receiving site, the decoder reverses the process and accurately restores the images to their proper format for viewing on a television set.

As broadcasters convert their signals to a digital format, these new products will enable them to deliver the HDTV signals for viewing on the next- generation digital televisions expected to be available in late 1998. The PowerVu HD products will provide features designed to ensure picture quality and offer broadcasters or cable providers new revenue opportunities through subscription services. Additionally, data broadcast services similar to those delivered by the Internet may be provided using the PowerVu HD products.

"The new PowerVu HD products continue the heritage of satellite video technology development at Scientific-Atlanta that began in the 1980s. They build upon the three generations of Scientific-Atlanta satellite digital compression products already in service and herald the beginning of our fourth generation products," said Perry Tanner, president of the Satellite Television Networks business unit at Scientific-Atlanta.

PowerVu HD Products

"Our years of experience in the digital television marketplace and an understanding of the capabilities our customers require in an HDTV product offering drove the development of the PowerVu HD products," added Tanner. "We selected Digital Vision AB of Sweden to develop HD products to our specifications. Our experience in delivering digital technology, coupled with Digital Vision's well-known reputation for developing high-quality video products, will enable users of the PowerVu HD products to confidently enter the high definition television arena."

The new PowerVu HD High Definition Encoder and Decoder will be previewed at the NAB '98 show and conference in Las Vegas, Nevada April 6-9.
