When does a sandwich turn into a sub? I think we could be getting close.

Thanks...yes numbers just flash in my head and it's second nature, but if you gave me an algebraic formula to solve, showing my work, I'd probably start crying. I also sort of mentally chart, which is an odd thing, but I do know my gift/curse helps me with trading. I'm just weird -g

I think a lot has to do with how we are taught. I was good at math but agree it was just memorization and mechanics for the most part. It wasn't until much later and too late that I realized the real world usefulness of a lot of it. Funny we always asked why we needed to learn it and no one ever had a good answer. Like you said, the teachers probably barely squeezed by themselves.
I'm constantly using Pythagorean theorem to figure out how long of tin I need for a roof I'm going to build. I used all kinds of stuff when I was building my indicators for trading. Simple fractional relationships are essential for electronics.
I always wondered if how you were taught or if you are just wired to "see" math like some people are. Math is mechanical to me but some people see shapes, waves, etc. I can't do that but I love physics and that would be so useful for understanding it.
