In a truly free society where the rights of the individual where held above the "power" of the state, men and women would be free to enter into relationships -- marriage or otherwise -- as pairs, as multiple partners and as same sex partners.

But we do not have a free society. Much of the 'freedom" is illusory.

Well Alex, I can see where and how are views differ allot better now.

I don't believe there is much doubt that having a man and a woman raising children is (on average) the best possible world. There are of course many exceptions to this. But on the whole I don't see it as very debatable. Children learn different things from men than they do from woman, and vice a versa. This exposure on a daily bases gives them the best hope for a well rounded view of the world and themselves.

That's not to say there aren't wonderfully caring gay couples who raise very well rounded children though. I'm simply discussing what is most likely to occur. You see the same sort of things happen in single parent families who's children are only raised with one sex.

The best possible world is a child with a mother and a father.

So society has built laws which encourage certain types of parental arrangements. Is it intrusive? Well sure to a certain extent, but that exists today. Polygamy is against the law. So is marrying your sister, brother, son or daughter. Society has already intruded and judged on these cases. Banning same sex marriages is the same sort of judgement.

Michael

p.s. How is the little one. Are you back to work already?
