Yes!

Scholz seems to be the only rational actor in the whole damned imbroglio.

Good Lord, perhaps he's the statesman we need to cool down this dangerous conflict.

Everyone else - both sides - seem intent on acting like lunatics.

after many mistakes and misunderstandings, simple answers and simple solutions nearly always win the day.
I like your level headed analysis. You’re right - it isn’t even so complicated. As far as Russia - fantasies and childish psychoanalysis aside, they want the same thing the US wants - no hostile enemies at their border. Especially if they are members of a hostile block.

My best guess - at this point, after expending so much blood and treasure - and angering half of the world - the Russians will not settle for their original demands. They will want Donbas and the territories along the South. I think, they may refrain from directly absorbing them into the Russian federation - to avoid having a potentially hostile neighbor without any land barrier. They may leave them as part of the independent “DPR” - or something like that. This way, if that Donetsk Republic is ever attacked, Russia could help them - without, technically, confronting NATO directly themselves.
