Druid,

I don't know how AOL gets that much for content. I can't believe it is worth it.

However, IMO Yahoo! is in worse shape in this department. I believe you could list all of YHOO's original content using only one hand! At the moment YHOO is still 98% a directory service.

$9/mo for packaging? Haven't you noticed that the bigger ISPs are getting more into the packaging of other people's content (as a means of differentiating themselves from the remaining small competitors)? Why do you think MCI wanted to partner with Yahoo? So they could raise rates, charging their customers for content packaging on top of Internet access? No! It was to compete with AOL, MSN, MSPG, ELNK, etc.

The fact remains that there is nothing on Yahoo that you can't get free elsewhere. They just package it and make the Internet a little easier.

If Kroger charged for grocery bags, many would bring their own or shop somewhere that gave them away. Kroger would not make a profit from selling bags.

Bob

Another significant difference in the ability to charge extra between YHOO and AOL is that AOL already has a base of paying customers and YHOO does not.

percentagewise, a lot less would sign up with YHOO for a fee than quit AOL + 100% increase in fees is a lot more than 10%...

(Sorry for being so cryptic)
