All: Any thoughts on what the ex-Borlanders have been doing at Microsoft for the last year (Anders, etc.)? Certainly Bill didn't buy them just to slow BORL down...did I miss something?

Also, any thoughts from you enterprise-savvy guys on what companies would make a good technical acquisition for BORL? Not buyout hype, just comments on what products from other companies would be synergistic with where BORL is heading.

This EMail I have received from Borland:

Dear Developer,

You're invited to the C++Builder 3 Product Launch!
February 11th, 7:00PM,
Gateway Ballroom
Software Development West,
Moscone Center in San Francisco

Come celebrate with us and be the first to see
NEW C++Builder 3 - the most powerful C++ compiler
and development tool ever created.

During the development of C++Builder 3, we
posted a survey regarding your needs as a C++
developer on our Web site at www.borland.com
We would like to extend our thanks and appreciation
to all of you who filled out our survey. See the survey
results at the end of this message.

NEW! C++Builder 3 delivers everything you
asked for and more with many new features to allow
you to be more productive completing your projects on
time and on budget:

Here are just some of the NEW things you can do with
C++Builder 3:

Take advantage of high-performance C++. Recognized for
technical excellence and benchmarked for superiority,
C++Builder 3 is Borland's fastest, award winning 32-bit C++
compiler. The NEW Adaptive Compiler technology reduces
compilation time and the high-speed Incremental Linker
reduces link time. When it has to be fast, you can depend on
Borland's compiler for un-compromised performance.

Manage complex projects easily. The new Advanced Project
Manager is an invaluable tool for working with C++ project files.
Control compiler settings, change project contents and compile
multiple targets like EXEs, LIBs, DLLs, RC files, and more.
Combine this with C++Builder's deployment wizards and you've
just delivered your project on time and on budget.
Debug quickly and efficiently. You get a complete set of robust
new debugging tools: DLL debugging, local variable inspection,
Module View, ToolTip Expression Evaluation, Event Logs and
Debug Inspectors all of which cut development time.

Gain integrated database productivity. Build a live database
application in seconds with over 25 data-aware components
and integrated database management utilities. Instantly
connect to data with complete ODBC connectivity and new
high-speed native drivers for MS Access, FoxPro, Paradox, and
dBASE.

Get to the Web. Use One-Step ActiveX/ATL, the most productive
way to create high speed, industry standard ActiveX controls and
COM objects. Automate TypeLib creation with NEW! Type
Library Editor. Reuse your ActiveX controls in Microsoft Office,
Visual Basic, Delphi, PowerBuilder and more.

Write new C++ applications in a fraction of the time.
C++Builder's professional IDE includes everything you need to
write new C++ applications -- a compiler, editor, debugger,
component library and integrated Forms Designer. Build a full
range of high-speed C++ applications: everything from
business, database, and Internet applications; to console
applications, and commercial systems. Now you can deploy
your applications on the Web by using ActiveForms to easily
build thin client, zero configuration Web deployed applications
that run in Internet Explorer. Select from over 25 ready to use
Internet components (HTML, HTTP, FTP, POP...) and build mail
servers, event dispatchers, newsgroup readers...and more.

Use existing C and C+ code. C++Builder 3 makes it easier to
work with existing projects, legacy code, COFF Import Libraries
and a multitude of third-party libraries. You wanted to be able to
build upon, compile, and link your existing C and C++ code, now
you can. C++Builder 3 Professional includes both OWL and
MFC Frameworks and over 130 reusable components to give
you all the productivity of rapid application development.
Build both visual and non visual applications. With C++Builder 3
you only need one tool, one language, and one environment to
build any Windows application. Building visual and non visual
applications requires only one skill set. You can switch between
a traditional C++ IDE to a robust visual IDE to build applications
are both visually appealing and sophisticated C++.

The summary of the survey responses gave us valuable insight
into what the C++ development community wants in a C++ tool,
what features you need to be more productive, and what types of
applications you have planned for future development.

Here is a snapshot of your Top 5 answers to some of the survey
questions:

The Top 5 Features that are most important to you are:
Editor and Debugger
Project Management
Support for industry standards
Compile OWL and MFC code
ActiveX Creation

The major challenges you are facing with your C++ development
tool are:
Creating Compelling Visual Front-ends to Apps
Lack of Visual Development
Development Cycle too long
Debugging
Performance

Your main development challenges moving forward are:
Database Programming
Moving to the Internet
Managing complex code and debugging large systems
Building Client/Server and Multi-tier Applications
Maintaining and updating existing code

The type of applications you would like to develop with
C++Builder are:
Internet/Intranet applications
Client/Server applications
Multi-tier applications
System level applications
OWL and MFC applications

What you seen is just some of the new enhancements of
Borland C++Builder 3.
Please check out the C++Builder 3 Web Launch in mid February
at www.borland.com for all the new information on C++Builder 3.

Thank you for your continuing support.
