You realize that the economy and the population grows each year so you need more oil/energy just to keep pace unless you can replace it with cost effective alternatives. Also, do you have a link to the quote so we can read it in full context to see who "we" is? "We" as in inhabitants of the third rock from the Sun, increase every year with more coming out of poverty. Prices for energy will soar unless the supply of energy, from fossil to renewable, keeps pace which it clearly has not.
