Let me rephrase. Blackrock is about money and investment first, and ESG much further down. But if a good business decision can paint them in a responsible progressive light, they'd be a fool not to take advantage of it.

And yes, politics and public perception affect a company. GS got labeled as the vampire squid and they've been stuck with that, even though they are more ethical than most of their peers. But BLK is not a political activist company. They clients will leave them if they don't produce results that agrees with them.

Furthermore, if your client has a strong ESG bias, as their asset manager, you have to invest in accordance with their values because you are their agent. But more often than not, that behavior takes the shape of divesting of the wrong companies than getting their boards to change the company strategy.

So yes, they have to aware of the politics, but no IMO that is not their driving force.

We're probably closer in our views than this discussion may suggest.
