Terry, how exactly do environmentalists measure biological diversity anyway?

It sounds like one of those terms with no real defined meaning. I mean what do they do say. "this forest is not diverse because it only has 1000 species, but this one is diverse because it has 1001 species??

Or do they just scan the woods and say, "Oh I see an old tree over there, this is a diverse environment"? :-)

Mike

Happy to hear! Even if you want to make man the measure of all things preserving or even enhancing the variety of our experience is unequivocally in our own selfish interests. Not only does it make life infinitely more exciting and worthwhile but more pragmatically it makes improves the stability of the whole in a manner akin to diversity in a portfolio. As you say biodiversity is a well defined and very simple concept.
