Your history is correct, but I think the amount of system stress is underappreciated. USD's behavior is reflecting a brewing global crisis (see my tweeter feed @WallSt_SunTzu for some more charts and commentary).

A better analogy is to see the US (and in general the Western) economies like the bus in the movie Speed. Once the bus went above a certain speed limit, slowing it down would cause it to blow up. Allowing it to run fast however would eventually end with either running out of gas (and blowing up) or hitting unforeseen obstacles that would wreck the system. The driver could try to turn left or right (pun intended) to save it, but the only real solution was to get off the bus.
