the Owens River ended in the desert

In what used to be Owens Lake, now a mostly dry and toxic lake bed. Stay away when the wind blows there.. At least Mono Lake hasn't dried up. And don't forget how the Salton Sea (now evaporating away) was originally filled. Even Death Valley used to be an inland sea, before "global warming" dried it up.. ;-)

BTW, If SoCal wants more water, let 'em build desalinization plants. Of course they won't work with windmills..
