Well, in our current see-saw contest performance we’ve flipped back to “saw”, meaning a general good week. The overall market was up 4.6% (NASDAQ Composite), and our two Biotech indices out preformed that: 5.4% for NASDAQ Biotech, and 10.3% for the S&P Biotech indices. That the latter index’s performance was almost double the first is certainly unusual this year, as you can see from the YTD index returns of -15% and -25%, respectively.

The breath of the performance is also indicated by the fact that the top five weekly performance of the individual stocks were all up more than 49%. AVDL, the top performing individual holding for the week with a +70% return, showed pretty smooth growth from last Tuesday, on no particular news. Since Yahoo apparently doesn’t cover news about the swiss stock, HRTIS.HE, I can’t give an explanation of it’s worst of the week haircut of -17%. This week news included the exception of the 45 for 1 reverse split for BBI. They still had a -13% loss for the week, the fourth worst recent performer.

Turning to the contest portfolios, good news, everyone: every portfolio was in the black for the week, with the top performing portfolio posting +17% for THEHAMMER. Being in the top 10 YTD was not a good predictor for this week’s performance. Only three of the ten managed to outperform the median portfolio. Congratulations to BRENDAN_49 returning to the list after a five week absence.

I think everyone is due congratulations. More weeks like this and we might see YTD returns in the black, once again.
