Those are also Republican bastions.

Representative McCarthy lives in Bakerfield.

Devin Nunes also lives in that area, 22 District.

Cities including Stockton, Fresno and Bakersfield received low scores due to a very low percentage of the population subscribing to a daily newspaper, the cities have very few physical bookstores, and weak lending libraries.

Dr. John W. Miller, head of the study of literate cities, “This isn’t a study about whether or not people can read, it’s about whether they do read.

That's an important point assuming people are literate enough in modern society; which many are not.

As in: You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink.

Or the water might be Liberty University, or one of hundreds of strict religions; and they drink to excess. From Burma to the USA. It can be government brainwashing, left or right; Marx, Jesus, Trump or Kim JongUn.. Any ism, really. Where people can not or are afraid to process information critically with evidence.

p.s. Great find about Ana Heim. Makes me think that there there was young Ida who fell on a floor in DeSantis's state.

p.s.s. Nobody is MORE pro public education than me. But I reject oversimplification of the problems. Or those who seek to define education with their own subjective views or curriculum.
