If you pull thistle, it will just come back up. It's hard to get the entire root by pulling. The only permanent way to get rid of it is spraying brush killer on it.

Thistle tends to thrive in poor soils.

It sounds like in the 7-good years and 7-bad years way of looking at things, this is one of the bad years for farmers without irrigation in the midwest. I think that big aquifier that the irrigation draws on is going dry in 20-25-years, so maybe the farmers in that area will need to find a way to incorporate prairie grass in Impossible Burgers or turn to raising cattle.
