Come on Al, where did I say that Office '98 would somehow convert Windows users? I said it will spur sales, which is what the deal is all about from Apple's point of view. Apple's new profit, new speed advantage, and Office '98 are items that help Mac small offices decide to upgrade. There are many of these offices and I've been getting reports from people who have said they now plan to upgrade.

Apple expected OS 8 to spur hardware sales and it did. US sales went up in July and August. Fact. Only the detioration of Japan's economy kept Apple from a good Q3. OS 8 has just been released in Japan and could cause an uptick there this quarter.

I've been on record as saying Apple's easiest path to growth right now is in getting its customers to upgrade. We all know that people upgrade their Macs less frequently than their PCs. Look at Apple's big revenue spike when the PowerPC was introduced. It's time for Apple to make them current customers. I'd love to see a trade-in program, even if it as a discount for 6500s only.

Don't try to make me one of your Mac-moonie straw men.
