Let me ask you honestly, have you ever considered suicide to help in achieve your overarching objective? Why or why not?

It is a tragedy of the commons problem. One person taking his life is not a solution. 7 billion people taking their lives may be a solution, but, as you say, that is an ugly solution.

The one child policy in China was a failure.

The policy was flawed, but to say it was a failure is a stretch.

My point has always been that there is no solution that people are likely to accept on a voluntary basis, and there may well be no solution at all.

The greatest invention of the last century was arguably vaccines.

This can't be called "invention" really, but the discovery of the importance of hand washing and generally speak sanitation were the greatest discoveries. Made in conjunction with the discovery of "germs".
