I usually do not put too much weight on benchmark results. But for the sake of arguments:

SPECfp95 SPECint95
PII333 9.14 12.80
PPC750/275 8.6 12.90

here is the reference:(from horse's mouth)

chips.ibm.com
intel.com
intel.com

John, could you be little nicer?

Why are so jumpy about this discussion on your beloved PPC vs. P-II? Is your guilty conscience showing all over your post.for making that faulty comparison? Do you work for Apple? Or is Apple paying you to do advertisement on your beautiful web page?

John, how is it "guilty conscience"? I was simply following the common etiquette. I've seen too many posters jump into a chat board and trash the board off topic subjects and unintelligent statements.

No, I don't work for Apple...Mac is just a hobby and I've never made a dime off of it other than from AAPL stock. In fact I've volunteered my time to help all my friends pick out and setup their Macs. (7 Macs in the last year alone) I often spent money out of my own pocket to buy L2 cache and cables for other people's Macs. There are no ads on my page. I made the site because I love Macs not because I want to make a few bucks. The "Apple Technology at Work" logo on my page is put there my own choosing. Apple doesn't pay anyone for that.

Wow! So PPC-750 is not out yet, and you have been hyping about it already and pitting it against the previous generation of P-II! Adding insult to injury, you are telling how it is fair to compare PPC-750 with P-II on 0.35um!

No..John.Systems based on PowerPC 750 have been out for 3 months. Please try to have that sink into your head. You can order one from the online store if you wish. apple.com
These are the G3 PowerMacs that we've been talking about. What I said is that the current line of G3 PowerMacs (including ones that beat the Pentium II 300 by 2X in BYTEmark) are really just Apple's mid-range systems. There will be another series of faster Macs using PPC 750 in a few month that target the high-end.

"Motorola also makes PowerPC chips."
Yes, but not on 0.25um (yet?)

No..John. Both IBM and Motorola have been making these PowerPC chips using .25um process. Why is it so hard for you to accept that there are other companies other than INTC that are capable of producing chips with .25um process. Please check both company's site for PR back in August. For your info, IBM is currently moving some production to .20 process. Both IBM and MOT have independently developed processes for producing chips with copper interconnects. Prototypes have already seen silicon.

Motorola is scaling their Power PC business down due to lack of demand. That left with only one effective manufacturer (IBM) who is not even supporting/shipping Power PCs and one sole customer who definitely require PPC.

No..John. Motorola not only makes PowerPC processors for desktops they also sell PowerPCs for embeded applications. It recently opened a new fab for PowerPC and SDRAM production. John most of your comment are based on speculation without much real knowledge in this field. If you're simply interested in bagging on MOT, IBM please do so on your own time. I don't think any of us benefit from that kind of discussion.
