I've heard from watching civilians after their first trip into space that what is most shocking is to see just how thin the breathable, life supporting atmosphere is on our planet. You can't live long at the top of Everest without canned oxygen yet from space, it is a tiny bump. It is like the skin of an apple.

To me, it doesn't matter if climate change is mostly driven by energy from the sun or man made changes to the composition of the atmospheric blanket that we breath. What matters is only fools would shit in the pools of water they drink from and by extension only fools would pollute the air they breath. EVs in CA powered with incremental electrons generated by burning NG are much "cleaner" than any ICE vehicles even if their environmental footprints to build and power are similar.

It makes great sense to use technology to keep the air and water vital for our life as clean as possible. But I am not a fan of "making statements" by paying 5x more for electricity while the majority of the world continues to use cheap energy.

I also prefer to see tax dollars go into encouraging as many as possible to put solar panels on their roofs and hope we can find a good way to recycle those when they are obsolete over giving the money to arms dealers to ship to Ukraine then have them blown up by the Russians so the arms dealers can sell even more arms to the US to ship over.... and by extension eventually get enough clean power here with our own NG and oil to say "piss off" to Saudi Arabia and compete with them exporting OUR energy rather than kiss their rings to export more of theirs.

From my last post, the height of Everest is about 5 miles... so the breathable, life supporting thickness of our tiny 60 mile atmosphere is only the bottom 8%...

The Earth's atmosphere is an extremely thin sheet of air extending from the surface of the Earth to the edge of space. The Earth is a sphere with a roughly 8000 mile diameter; the thickness of the atmosphere is about 60 miles. In this picture, taken from a spacecraft orbiting at 200 miles above the surface, we can see the atmosphere as the thin blue band between the surface and the blackness of space. If the Earth were the size of a basketball, the thickness of the atmosphere could be modeled by a thin sheet of plastic wrapped around the ball. Gravity holds the atmosphere to the Earth's surface. Within the atmosphere, very complex chemical, thermodynamic, and fluid dynamics effects occur. The atmosphere is not uniform; fluid properties are constantly changing with time and location. We call this change the weather.

At any given location, the air properties also vary with the distance from the surface of the Earth. The sun heats the surface of the Earth, and some of this heat goes into warming the air near the surface. The heated air rises and spreads up through the atmosphere. So the air temperature is highest near the surface and decreases as altitude increases. The speed of sound depends on the temperature and also decreases with increasing altitude. The pressure of the air can be related to the weight of the air over a given location. As we increase altitude through the atmosphere, there is some air below us and some air above us. But there is always less air above us than was present at a lower altitude. Therefore, air pressure decreases as we increase altitude. The air density depends on both the temperature and the pressure through the equation of state and also decreases with increasing altitude.

Where does it all go

The size of the planets is not the issue. The sun is remarkably stable. The physics of the star are such that a steady state of gravitational crushing hydrogen until it fuses is balanced by the outward pressure of the fusion explosion itself. If the sun were causing global warming it would have to be accumulating a lot more mass in order to heat up, and even that would take a billion years.

Mars and Jupiter and the Moon are not heating up. The heating is localized to our planet and it's atmosphere which is transparent to visible light, but increasingly not transparent to infared light.

The universe really does make sense as a whole. It's not a collection of factoids that are independant of each other.
