I re-read that first sentence a couple of times and still don't understand it. So was there a question in that? My "argument" is simply a fairly neutral interpretation and first hand recollection of what happened. I guess my argument might be that we probably shouldn't give ultimatums given the stakes. If it spreads - then we'll probably do something different. There are strategists who game this out.

If Putin is sick, we can wait him out - and if not, he's so old that his decline will happen anyway. At the time he is replaced and/or dies - inevitably - we use that opportunity to gain influence. Brawling with Putin seems to have limited upside and unlimited downside, much like shorting a stock.

On the last sentence, Putin created the media that furthered his agenda.
