There were rumors about a Compaq takeover a bit earlier in the year, but it appears that the big deal Compaq was geting set to do is already done--DEC. Some people still think Compaq may do a deal with AMD, but in my opinion its pretty unlikely.

People on this thread are always speculating about IBM and AMD. It makes sense to me, but I don't think there are any rumors about it floating around in the broader market right now.

David, IMHO the only thing stopping a potential takeover right now is uncertainty over whether AMD will manage to get yields on the 0.25u process up in Fab 25. Why buy AMD for $25 when you could have it for $15, which is a possibility if the yields don't get better? (even though I think they will) Another negative is that no computer manufacturer wants Intel mad at them.

David, Greg and I have been speculating on a CPQ takeover or equity participation deal. The more I think about it, the more I think we won't get it until AMD gets yields up. That could be next month or it could be never. That's the problem. I personally expect AMD to disappoint this quarter due to the yield problem. Then I want to see a base at the 12-15 level, at which point, it becomes a buy.

The main obstacle to a takeover is the existing management, which seems incapable of executing. How many times have they been a day late, a dollar short? I know Intel is great and all, but shareholders have been extremely patient. I don't know how this will play out, but it will be interesting.

Let's hear your theory.
