You are confusing capability with behavior.

As Steven Pinker said:" this is the most peaceful time in human history.

If our ancestors, had nuclear weapons and all the other bad stuff, they would have used them quicker than we have.

The measurement I am using is human and social behavior e.g. slavery was common until just 160/200 years ago. Women couldn't vote in this country until 100 years ago, and segregation was legal until 55 years ago and gays could not marry until last week :).

The concept of civil rights is only a few years old because people didn't understand it.

The middle ages were the Dark ages for all the torture and killing, hand to hand, by lack of social order and the churches. .

The world has literally outlawed torture. Yes, it happens, but not in the open, just like racism happens, but today they need to use dog whistles like gender studies-lol!

And female primates have been subjugated by males for all of human/primate history.

The one exception is the bonobos who are ruled by the females and are the most peaceful primate ever, because the males cannot cross the Congo river.

Females are rising all over the world for the first time in history and now hold high positions in many countries and rule a lot of them, especially the most advanced countries, like the Nordic countries, and they are fighting patriarchal societies around the world.

Nuclear weapons aimed against primarily civilian targets are barbaric.
Cluster bombs?
Nerve gas?

Not one of these is selective for "the enemy". They are weapons of terror invented by people who would call themselves "civilized" compared to those who didn't have them, whom they characterized as "uncivilized" (or barbaric).

Even the term "barbarian" was relative to Rome. But I'd counter that it takes one to know one. And Romans certainly knew and celebrated barbarity.

History and the present only have pockets of genteel people living amongst a majority that aren't.
