My mom was eventually diagnosed with bi-polar, and eventually was prescribed lithium which really did let her lead a normal life for many many years. But looking back it was also emotional/relationship pressures that lead to her problems/depression... I'm not a big fan of pharmaceuticals to solve emotional mental problems. But it did seem to help her for a long while.

Late in life, she stopped taking her medication and went downhill again. Had to be admitted and once again received ECT. The ECT does seem to be very effective in that it erases short term memory, and even some long term memory. So the person that is suffering from suicidal depression forgets why they were so depressed. And of course they are relieved just to be released from the facility, to have freedom again.

But she soon relapsed back into the same funk. The last few years of her life were not happy ones. She just kinda gave up on anything positive. I hope she's in a better place now, if there is such a thing.

But yeah, like you say. Looking back it's no doubt she was put under too much pressure. My dad left. Left her to take care of the kids. He paid some alimony for a while, but not what he should have. She was left alone with the burden.

Growing up the way I did I decided I was not going to get married at a young age and have kids. I wanted to get financially secure first. I didn't get married until I was 39, lol.
