I thought the temperature cited was pretty far downstream in the exhaust but still a very low 500 degrees. At least, I would think that'd be pretty low. It definitely is when compared to a catalytic converter.

I thought a high exhaust temp actually indicated greater efficiency and less pollution. No? I know from experience that a leaner fuel/air mixture will result in increased combustion temps, to the point of burning a hole in a piston if it gets too lean.

Another question. How do they get the engine started if it has no glow plugs? I know they're not necessary once an engine is running (and has been running long enough) as the combustion temperatures become sufficient to ignite the charge. But I can't figure out how they get this engine to light up. Is the compression so high that the compression itself causes ignition?
