There certainly was a cost to the solar panels and the car and insurance to ensure it all stays working, but it was all paid off when times were good. One key to doing well is the ability to cut back, sometimes way back, on expenses when the environment changes. You can cut back by living a more miserable life, but you can also cut back by investing in infrastructure when you have the funds to do so.
