Jim: Thanks for the input. I'm still concerned whenever a 600 lb. gorilla says its wants to play in my backyard.
My fear is that IBM puts the silicon-germanium chips to good use with the Commquest propriety design (which is a complete DSP solution according to their product page) using .12 mu lines in copper. Its fantasy right now, but the technology is on the shelf, and such a chip would be very fast and the overall solution very cheap, assuming it is a single chip solution as advertised.
I know you said that Commq. hasn't had any design wins to date, but I wonder, is that because they lack the best designs, or has it been because no OEM would give them a contract because they were such a small shop and carried an inherent risk of failing to deliver. With IBM behind them, they are no longer a small shop and they can deliver what they promise. The only question now is, can they compete on price/performance?
