AMZN Barriers to Entry

During the last two weeks there seems to have been a point discussed here with two opposing views. I would like to call everyone's attention to it and tweak out some discussion.

Question: Is there a significant barrier to entry into the on-line book business?

I have read from some here that the first in wins. According to this view, AMZN has a lead it will never lose. Other competitors are too far behind. Mindshare already to AMZN, so much so, infact that they could easily derive additional revenue from ads on their wbsite (since it is the industry standard) anytime they want.

Opposite view is that there are many competitors and the number is growing daily. Absence of brick and mortor also carries with it a very low barrier to market and anyone can jump in. In fact they are.

Thoughts Folks?
