Perhaps the MPEG4 collaboration anouncement was a disappointment. The press release pre-anouncement made it sound like it was something even more exciting.

To All,

QTVR is a component of QuickTime. The QTVR software is used to create 360ø movies. Do not confuse QTVR software with QT. QT itself is a media layer with many aspects. QT file formats include image, movie, and sound and probably a lot more. QT comes free on apple machines, the pro development software is a little more and will probably include hypercard.

MPG3 is quickly being adopted as the file format which will revolutionize the sound recording distribution system. MPG4 is improved MPG3. Soon no one will have to drive to Tower Records on a rainy night to get a CD anymore. There are about 5 major media distributors: Warner, MCA, CBS/Sony etc... All stand to loose a bundle as the key to profits in the media business is distribution. Any idiot can produce a CD but you have to have an efficient way to get one copy of one CD into each store in the world. This means either getting 'signed' with the vast distribution companies or hand addressing, inventorying, wrapping and billing one CD for each store, not to mention returns. Up til now the only way to distribute econmomically was throught the giant distributors with their huge inventories, mainframes, databases, and royalty software programs. The net has the potential to obliviate the power of the distribution industry and give that power to the little guy. We are talking media, audio, video, interactive, holographic, instantaneous.

Lest anyone discount the importance of the music industry. Keep in mind that the MUSIC industry is BIGGER than the MOVIE industry.

MicroSoft's competing software is total junk. QT is the jewel in the Apple software vault.

---------

MOT still produces PPC chips. I believe that they are no longer participating in their development.

I think something is cooking in computerland. Just look at the companies which adopted the QT file format. No MicroSoft... Apple has put the NC on the front burner, Oracle and Apple are doing the database thing, IBM has only Apple and itself to support the PPC against the onslaught of Merced. SGI is getting killed by NT. Sun's PureJava is iffy. And Netscape is getting clobbered by Explorer. Compaq buys IBM's biggest competitor and it looks to migrate its customers to the Intel (dark) side. Apples board members include the CEO of Oracle and York from IBM.

All the conspirators in the QT thing are looking to set up a new type of network standard to balance the WinTel juggernaut. All the conspirators have something to gain by instituting such a standard. Each has superior technology but without unity there can be no fight. Something is cooking behind closed corporate doors. Maybe this is the first shot fired by the allies.
