An interesting table of statistics. Surprised that Japan is only number 8 on that table, even Germany number 10. When I was in the business, Japan was the main competitor, and perhaps Germany to a lesser extent. Both countries very capable tough industrial competitors in the chip business.

The difference in the geometries from 28 nm down to 10 nm is just a function of finance, time and manpower research hours. All in plentiful supply in China.

Beside which, even at 28 nm you can easily cover 100% of the silicon chip requirement with maybe a slight temporary set-back in hi-tek processor performance while there is a catch up in the lower geometry chip technology.

The cutting off of support for the Chinese venture into silicon chip technology is over 20 years too late. Another counterproductive shooting in the foot by the West.
