< What compels them to dress like this?> People are herd animals. Like chimpanzees and wolves, we are only happy, in a group where everyone walks, talks, dresses, prays, has sex, exactly the same. Diversity scares us. Conformity is comfortable. In every human group (chess club, pool party, business meeting, etc.) there is a dress code (formal or informal). Violate the code, and you will be excluded, ostracized, shamed. Maybe burned at the stake as a witch. Truly, we are just hairless chimps with opposable thumbs.
