TF...timing...got pulled over by local constabulary to have a chat today...
was on way to have breakfast w/a friend...when flashing lights appeared in my rear view mirror...well, seems she saw that I had waaay out of date plates and wanted to chat w/me...
prior, I had taken a vehicle out of storage after 9 years...went down to DMV to register it, got new stickers and a registration paper....I asked at the time if I needed new metal plates...was told no..so, went home and put the stickers on.
drove it for the first time today..
back to today....the officer informed me that in fact, I did need new plates, never mind the current sticker and registration...after a half hour delay for her to check this and that.
she came back and said the plates weren't even registered to my car....?huh?
the registration paper had a different plate number.
the reason it took so long, the cops always take a long time looking thru my records...no tickets for over 30 years....and they tend not to believe it for some reason...

eventually gave me warning ticket...so, after breakfast, went BACK to the DMV...to get actual new metal plates. told them the story had to argue with them, they wanted to charge me again for the plates, even though they'd f'd up in the first place..it was only a couple of weeks ago I registered it....after about an hour of arguing, and looking for the real plates that went with the registration..they finally gave me a new registration paper and new plates and stickers...

what a waste of my time..arrgh

what really irks me is that I see cars w/no plates at all driving around, sometimes the same ones, over and over.. and po po seems to never stop them
I would have settled for one of those from candid camera...lol

I remember an article from years ago about personalized plates that fooled the censors, at least temporarily. One was a CA plate that read 6ULDV8. That one would actually be appropriate today in a number of cases.. :-)
