I’ve got lots of family stories that parallel yours. My Uncle was in charge of the photo dept at the Los Angeles Dept of Water & Power… an extremely talented individual & also a stone cold alcoholic. They put him through AA and other similar programs and he remained a recovering addict until he stroked out in his late 60’s. I didn’t learn what caused all of it until we’ll after his death. Turns out in Korea he was part of a unit that was charged with digging up graves where he would photograph faces of the deceased for identifying later on.
