This is very interesting Marshall. And as always it has many implications which are almost wholly unexplored. I have noticed that downloading in Madrid takes an awful long time even though it is a big city. Naturally I never knew exactly what went into this. I still dont but now I am ignorant at a mcuh higher level :) Now the curious thing seems to be that if you are trying to access pages from your own companies network it will always turn out to be advantageous in terms of speed to do so from your company server instead of trying to get access the web from a local point. Is that not so?

Ok Marshall here is a stab at the situation as I see it. A number of isp providers out there are itching to figure out a way to charge more for the internet service that they provide. I believe that this will be possible for corporations who are willing to pay to have a a recognized name monitor the performance of their connection assiduously and improve it (by trial an error if necessary as in your link) with investments in infrastructure. I would guess that both IBM and ATT have such a model in mind. Now if a corporation contracts for such value added providers you will want your workers using it. Remote workers will not be an exception. In the case of ATT with their entrance into local markets this would give them an opportunity for end-to-end service. I am sure they would view this as desirable. The point I am trying to make is that it is rather inevitable that performance will be selectively monitored and enhanced so that mobile workers will not want to simply dial up their local point of service because they will not know what they are getting if they do that.
